Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson & The DCU

Earlier today (03/25/14) Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took to a Q&A on Twitter. And in regards to being a part of the DC cinematic universe (DCU), he stated the following.

Myself & DC have agreed on a character. Extremely complex, well known (but  never played) and a pure BAD ASS MF;) #RockTalk .@ThomasEspin

Green Lantern (John Stewart) and Black Adam are my fav superheroes, but GL's already been made and stamped. #RockTalk @CFitzyy

Now, I know what your asking yourself... What does it all mean? Well good news chaps, I’m here to help put things into prospective. I see two major questions being brought up. One: What does this mean for DC/WB. And two: Who the hell will he play!? Well, good news baby birds, I just might have the answer.

Now, while I’ll admit Johnson isn’t a top-tier actor, I think we can all agree that’s not why a lot of people hire him. They hire him because of the presence and persona he brings to his characters. That being he is the moat electrifying man is entertainment, and he is 265 lbs and 6'5". And I will say I like him as a pure actor. He has been steadily improving over the years, to become a legit Hollywood actor. So let’s take a look at the questions.

What It All Means

Well this means a couple things. One being that WB wins The Rock battle. And Marvel can suck it. But more importantly, depending on the character, this means WC/DC is trying to get their act together. The main criticism fans have had against WB it that they seem to have little faith in their DC properties. And the fact being they want to learn from their mistakes, this means that WB is trying to get their DCU set up. Weather it be a near or future project, they are not only expanding, but recruiting talent. And less we forget, people often complain about the “serious” tone of the DCU, but enlisting Johnson means one thing… a GOOD TIME!

Character Possibilities

I have amassed a list, of what I believe, to be the most unlikely, likely, hell no’s, and best fit’s for the The Rock… And I know most are villains, but I feel that is where he could thrive, and be a better fit. The only down side is that means he will most likely be one and done. But you never know.

Green Lantern (John Stewart)
STATUS: Now, I am going to skip the “pros and cons” on this one. He stated that he won’t be GL. Now, obviously he could just be lying, which actors do to protect the role. However, I have to take his word on this one.
VERDICT: No

Black Adam
STATUS:  I am going to skip the “pros and cons” on this one as well. If you didn’t know, in the past, Johnson was poised to play this character in a Shazam movie. Obviously this never came to fruition, but it did give us a little insight into WB/DC’s head. However, I believe he only mentions the character to throw off the scent.
VERDICT: No.

Solomon Grundy
PROS: A beast of a man.
CONS: Completely  CGI.
STATUS: You do not get someone as electrifying as Dwayne Johnson to play a character who is completely computerized. You get him because of his personality on screen. I mean people call him “The Rock” for crying out loud.
VERDICT: No.

Doomsday
STATUS: Same as Grundy.
VERDICT: No.

Black Mask
PROS: No CGI. Easy to introduce a rich back-story.
CONS: Not that “well known”. Not a Superman level of power.
STATUS: Let’s not forget it doesn’t have to be a JL or Superman villain. I really thing Black Mask, in this “real-world” tone, could be a great character; and Johnson could do well. The problem is, not a lot of people know the character. And people want to see The Rock in recognizable roles.
VERDICT: Unlikely

Bizarro
PROS: Fits the physical bill. Not a “thespian” role. Could easily put his own spin on it.
CONS: Again, not a lot of film fans know much about this guy, if anything.
STATUS: This character in general is a long shot to work well in the realistic DCU. While in theory he could be a good fit, seeing this character on the big screen at all is a little questionable.
VERDICT: Unlikely

Lobo
PROS: Fits the physical profile. Back-story.
CONS: Not well known. CGI.
STATUS: This character has been rumored for MOS 2, and would be a good fit for Johnson. However, not many people know who he is, and DC/WB is more focused on establishing the bigber name heros.
VERDICT: Unlikely

Martian Manhunter

PROS: A well known character, who has the strength and abilities to not only be a hero, but a villain if they wanted to. Also, has a deep back-story. Practical effects, minimizing the CGI.
CONS: This character has mainly been portrayed as a loner. He has so much power, but chooses to stay behind as the others fight. Now, obviously that's only one interpretation of the character, and could easily change. The other thing is he is another alien. I don't think WB/DC want to bombard their universe with lots of aliens. The name is a little lame too.
VERDICT: Possible

Darkseid
PROS: Another physical beast. Easy to establish a more intricate background for the character. Well known.
CONS: Mostly, if not all, CGI. Distance.
STATUS: This is easily a fan-fav for the Justice League film. Johnson’s presence could be easily transferred to this villain. However, this is one of, if not, the toughest foe for the JL, and WB wouldn’t want to “blow their load” in the first film. This is why Thanos wasn’t the villain in The Avengers, or its upcoming sequel. And I have a feeling, they want to use Johnson as soon as they can.
VERDICT: Possible.

Brainiac
PROS: Known. Some CGI, but could be mainly practical. Back-story.
CONS: …I got nothing.
STATUS: Though most see Brainiac as a Superman villain, he could easily be a great foe for the JL. People know enough about the character to recognize him, but easy to establish a more intricate back-story. You get Johnson’s on-screen presence, depth, and could look bad ass.
VERDICT: Likely

I am very excited to see what happens with this relationship. I am a fan of Johnson, and feel he could be a very memorable character; good or bad. But let me know what you think. Are you a fan? Who do you what to see him as? Thanks for reading.
