After MOS 2?

In a recent interview with the New York Times Kevin Tsujihara, CEO of WB, stated “a film series will be announced in the near future” in regards to DC properties. Mr. Tsujihara has also stated, last September, that they would be announcing 12 to 14 DC projects. However, that includes games, and television series. Many have speculated this means Justice League. Which got me thinking; what is/should happen next, following Man of Steel 2 (May 6, 2016)? Should it even be Justice League? Don’t worry though; I have amassed a list of possible options, and what they would mean for the new DCU, answering the tough questions like: What? When? Solo’s? So let’s dive in.

Possible Properties

First, to asses what could be next, we have to address what it won’t be. And for the sake of argument, the JL consist of Supes, Bat’s, WW, GL, and Flash.

1) Man of Steel 3 – Man of Steel 2 is sort of becoming a pre-Justice League film anyway. But, I’ll argue that it makes sense for Batman and WW to already exist in this universe. However, WB/DC has done enough with Supes for now. They know they need to expand their characters.

Verdict: No

2) Solo Batman – WB/DC is playing it very smart. They have found a way to reboot the Batman character without retelling the back-story and giving us just enough that we get it’s newly established tone, but also just enough that we can easily transfer from the Nolan trilogy. However, that’s exactly what it is…just enough to hold us over.

Verdict: No

3) Solo Wonder Woman – Again, I have to hand it to WB/DC. I love the WW character, but I understand the risk involved. Having a leading super-heroine based film is a risk. And, similar to Bat’s in MOS 2, we will get just enough of the character. This way when we do get her solo film, we won’t have to spend half of the movie telling about her back story; so she can spend the rest of the time kicking ace and taking names. And just like Bat’s, it will be enough to hold us over.

Verdict: No

And as a side note, I’m ready for the day when we can stop calling it a female superhero film, and just call it a superhero film.

4) Green Lantern/Flash – Now, I have put these two together, because they are basically the same reasoning. Like I said, having Supes, Bat’s, and WW already established makes sense. However, I can’t really see how to work an established GL and/or Flash character in this DCU. And the way I see it, there are two options; In JL or not.

If they do not establish them in the JL movie, then obviously they need to do it before hand. For this there are two options: Team up (which you could read more about in the “Blog Archives”) or Solo films. I like the idea of establishing the characters before hand, that way we can actually care about the characters. But for some odd reason, WB/DC doesn’t consult with me…go figure. But WB, and us fans, would like to see a JL movie ASAP. Striking while the iron man is hot…see what I did there?

Verdict: Possible
When:
I could see a team-up film in 2018, pushing JL to about 2020. With solo’s I could see 2018 and 2020. However this does mean JL would be pushed back until, earliest, 2022.

5) Justice League – Many have speculated that this, in fact, will be the next film after MOS 2; and with good reasoning. Considering MOS 2 has become a pre JL movie in and of itself (similar to Iron Man 2 I might add), and the fact that there have been several rumors that they will be shooting for like 10 months, AND the rumors of MOS 2 ending with a cliff hanger.

Verdict: Probable
When: If they are shooting parts of JL with MOS 2, the earliest could be around 2017. However, I see it being more likely to open mid 2018.

Personally, I would like to see GL and Flash being established before a JL film. But I trust WB/DC to make the big-boy decisions, and I feel which ever direction they go will make sense and BE AWESOME. Let me know what you think; What do you want to see after MOS 2? Thanks for reading.
