Superman’s Suit; Why The Color?

I just have a quick question to pose to you fine readers. And let me just say, this is probably my most geeked-out article yet. In Man of Steel, why exactly is Kal’s suit the color that it is? Now the obvious reason is: “Because it’s Superman…Duh.” Fair point. But being a super-nerd, I would like to delve into why this may be. I like to call this ‘The Kryptonion Theory’.

Now, if you saw the Yahoo! Man of Steel Live Fan Event for the DVD release, you may have seen director Zach Snyder dive into a whole shpeal about the origin of the Codex. So it feels like he wants to have a reason for everything. Which is something he also said during that event. So, that in mind, I believe there is a reason for Supes’ suit being the way it is.

We saw in the Krypton opening in MOS, that there are indeed separate garments for separate occasions. For example, underneath the battle armor worn by Zod , Jor, and others, is a blue suit. They all seem to wear this color; lending evidence that this is the “everyday” wear. But then we also saw General Zod and his crew be taken prisoners, and their wardrobes changed into the gray uniforms we see them in for the remainder of the film.

With this in mind I thought to myself, well it seems they have different color suits to resemble different societal outlooks. Meaning that Kal-El’s suit could have been that color for a number of reasons. My guess is that it was meant for a as a celebratory garment. Or one that was meant to be worn by a “leader”.

We also saw in MOS that there were several other pods (where the suit is first shown). This could mean that there are several other suits, with different meanings, still in those pods. And we know WB wants to sells as many toys as they can. So having the option for more suits is only a benefit.

But what about the MOS Prequel Comic? We see that the Kryptonian’s are wearing the gray suits. Wait a sec; didn’t you just say the gray ones are for prisoners? Yes. So why now does ‘gray’ mean ‘exploration’? You got me there, but hey, it’s all make believe. And if you are this far into this article, you (like me) seem to actually care a little bit about this. So just listen.

Yes, at the time of Krypton’s destruction, the gray suits seem to represent prisoners. But keep in mind that the events in the comic takes place 18,000 years prior. So they could have changed some of their meanings. Or who cares other than me? The point is, they did a good job at leaving the doors open, and if the story calls for it, they could introduce a new suit that could even help Clark with different abilities. Similar to the “Eradicator Suit’ in the unmade Superman Lives movie.

Well, that’s what I got. But let me know what you think; Why is Supes’ suit a different color, in your opinion? Comment below. Thanks for reading.
